    wheel size & suspension question

    Hey all,

    First up, wheel question:

Is there any advantage to an 18" wheel over 17"? i.e. would there be an advantage of an 18x8 over a 17x8 for the FR-S? Cosmetics is of no interest to me on this question (though I do want a good looking wheel), I am purely concerned about handling dynamics and acceleration/deceleration. Would I be better off sticking with OEM diameter and opting for 1/2"-1" wider?

    Second, suspension:

I might hit a track day on a rare occasion, but much of my driving will be to work, and then driving on the windy back roads. Should i really invest in a set of coilovers, or would I be better off with a decent shock (see: Koni Yellows) and spring setup, and use the money I saved to get some chassis bracing or better sway bars? Or would I be better keeping the stock shocks/springs and just investing purely in sway bars and bracing?

I have no preference for brands here, I welcome any suggestions, so I can get plenty of research done before I buy.

Stock with 17 then unless you have a lot of money to fork out for some top end rims your will probably just be adding weight to your wheels and tires. Most people I have talked to run 17 on the track I even heard of people running 16's. plus 16 and 17 inch tires are way cheaper to replace after a day of racing.

I've been inclined to stick with the 17s unless there was a really good reason not to - thanks for your opinion, and your car looks great - I definitely want to get rid of that extra gap above the wheels at some point.

You swapped springs, but kept the stock shocks/struts, correct?

The 17 x 7 Michelin Pilot Super Sport summer tires are great and there are tons of great looking wheels available. Strictly on the basis of style; I've always liked Cragar mags., but you can also be sure it's a high quality product as well.

As for the rest..... It may be best to invest in better sway bars and bracing. Import Turner magazine had an advertisement that described sway bars that are not perfectly cylindrical and has the capacity to provide better rigidity for those windy roads.
