stolen from autoguide.com “Gone in 60 Seconds” Plot Foiled, Man Arrested With 99 Car Keys to Vehicles Worth $4 Million | AutoGuide.com News

Before he was able to act, Police in Toronto, Canada arrested a man who planned a daring heist straight from the plot of the “Gone in 60 Seconds” Hollywood blockbuster.

Andrzej Zalewski was charged with numerous counts of break and enter, theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property after he was found with 99 sets of car keys to vehicles worth $4 million.

According to Det. Paul LaSalle, Zalewski and an accomplice had a “shopping list” of cars, and had been canvasing neighborhoods, breaking into homes and snatching keys to vehicles. Keys in Zalewski’s possession when he was arrested included those to a Lexus, Range Rover and even a Maserati. All cars on the list were 2011 models.

Police are confident Zalewski has ties to organized crime, which is known for planning such heists where cars are custom ordered for clients overseas.

Congrats to the cops in Canaduh! Happy for the owners of the stolen cars, at least they got their cars back and most likely in once piece since someone who would go that far to steal a car would want it in mint condition, no damage.

I won't be surprised if we later find out that more people get arrested from this and from other countries. If they do enough investigation, this could uncover a serious criminal organization.

Don't forget the amount of money he would make off of it. $4 million worth of cars here in USA/Canada can sell for a lot more in other countries. People in places like Dubai are loaded and will pay what ever will make the seller have over the keys.

    Glad he was caught!

Wonder how the police got wise to his plan, or was it simply the result of arresting him on one of his burglaries?

    from the original source:
Since July, York Regional Police have been investigating a series of residential break-and-enters in which several cars were taken — a Maserati, a Range Rover and a Lexus SUV, totaling $250,000.

Armed with a “shopping list” of luxury vehicles, the thief and an accomplice would cruise affluent areas and break into houses looking for keys to the cars on the list, said Det. Paul LaSalle.

Police believe the break-and-enters occurred in York Region as well as from Toronto to Hamilton.

In executing eight search warrants, officers recovered numerous disguises, police scanners and a cache of 99 sets of keys to other luxury cars, all 2011 models, which haven’t been stolen, LaSalle said.
