Subaru To Continue Building Toyota Camry In U.S.
Japan’s Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., maker of Subaru vehicles, confirmed today that it will continue with its venture with Toyota Motor Corp. to build Toyota’s Camry midsize sedan at Subaru’s assembly plant in Lafayette, IN. Toyota is launching the redesigned 2012 version of the Camry this fall and Subaru will make 100,000 copies of the new Camry at its plant that also produces Subaru’s Legacy midsize sedan.
Subaru inked a deal with Toyota to begin building Camrys at the Subaru Indiana assembly plant in 2007, a time when Toyota needed more capacity for the sedan that has been the nation’s best-selling car for much of the last decade. Toyota also owns 16.5 percent of Subaru and the two companies are preparing to launch a jointly developed sport coupe that relies heavily on Subaru components but will be rear-wheel driven rather than incorporate the all-wheel-drive layout for which Subaru is typically identified.
