Nice article. Some of those make perfect sense. I tend to drive a bit more safely now that I'm a bit older. So I can't say I encounter these problems too often. For me I normally just open my interior lights, open my window, put my hands on the steering wheel, and talk to the police in a polite tone. You have to remember more than a few of them have been shot or harmed by people when they're doing traffic stops so anything to make them feel safer will help you out.

That along with look him in the eye, be courteous and most of all be honest. Those things together will probably do the most to get you out of a ticket. I gave them out for seven years.

I dont think I have ever been able to get out of a speeding ticket. I guess its part of the thrill of speeding somtimes. the thought you might get caught. the getting caught part sucks though.

The getting caught part always sucks. When I ended up getting one too many tickets I started to change my driving style.

Did you use to be a cop? What was the best and worst traffic stop you ever made?

I still think the best and most proven way out of too many speeding tickets is to take them all to court. It will cost you more sometimes but you wont have the infractions on your record or the rise in insurance to deal with.

speeding tickets are the hardest to fight in court. coming from experience. even with a good lawyer sometimes at best they can only lower the charge to a slower speed and smaller fine. it is harder because they have solid evidence of your speed(radar gun readout). also as long as the police indicates in his report that he calibrated the radar gun to manufacturers instructions at an interval thats also manufacturer specified. it will hold in court no matter what. taking them to court is the least effective way of dealing with it.

Yeah, back before the crust of the earth cooled I was a cop from 1957 thru 1964 in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak. The most traffic excitement is we had Woodward avenue running thru our city. Woodward was at one time considered the biggest illegal raceway in the United States. There were four lanes in each direction divided by a large boulevard and a traffic signal light every 1/2 mile. This was back in the "happy days" of history and Woodward was lined with drive-in restaurants. Most of the traffic activity took place playing cat and mouse with the boys on Woodward. They would try to outsmart us and we would try to outsmart them. I never had a traffic stop that was all that bad.

I was never heavy in giving out tickets and those that were courteous and honest about what happened were the ones most likely to get a pass.

Those were the days. Now most cops seem like they have a stick up their ... Although I can't really blame them. They've been given a really bad rep throughout the years. You always hear about the bad things cops do and rarely hear about the good things. Same thing with people driving fast or modified cars. You always hear how they race and do stupid things on the street. But how often do you hear about the good things. Like how a lot of car clubs like to raise money for charities by hosting car shows and local track events. Also the people driving modified cars that work with the police to promote safer driving and give lectures at schools saying that just because you have a fast car doesn't mean you have to drive fast.
