Yesterday the annual Gumball 3000 Rally wound its way from Quebec to Toronto, with one thrill seeker finding out the hard way about the province of Ontario's strict street racing law. The driver of a 2009 Dodge Charger from California was stopped once near Kingston, Ontario for driving 140 km/h in a 100 km/h zone and given a ticket. Two hours later, the same driver was pulled over in his Charger traveling 170 km/h. Under Ontario’s “Street Racing” legislation, anyone caught exceeding the posted limit by more than 50 km/h faces tough penalties – and that’ sjust what happen.
Ontario Provincial Police (stationed at almost every exit along the 401) charged the driver with stunt driving, seized his license for seven days and impounded his vehicle. (Perhaps the team in the Volvo limo will give him a ride the rest of the way?)
The Gumballers were on their way to Toronto for the night, before embarking on the final leg to New York.
