Subaru BRZ Prototype Review by Car and Driver

The first review of the Subaru BRZ prototype is in from Car and Driver

Here's some of the more interesting bits from the article:
    • Only Subaru personnel responsible for engineering and at test track.
    • Engineering of the prototype dictated the final car's styling rather than vice versa.
    • Toyota's role was styling the car.
    • Production line begins May 2012 at Subaru's build center in Gunma Perfecture, Japan
    • Car will be welded from regular materials such as steel, except for aluminum hood
    • Subaru and Toyota will share nearly identical versions, sharing:
      • Subaru flat four FB20 2.0L 200+ hp engine, using Toyota's D4Sport dual port and direct-injection technology (7500rpm redline)
      • two Aisin 6-speed transmissions (one manual and a conventional automatic). Auto will have 3 modes - auto, manual, and 'temporary manual'
      • one basic interior
      • one set of body stampings and glass
      • ** badges, wheels, and small trim items will be different
    • Suspension is impreza-derived, with coil-over struts in front and three-link rear suspension.
    • Motor will sit 4.7" lower than Impreza's placement and 9.4" inches closer to the center of the car.
    • No sunroof.
    • Notchback trunk (not a hatchback).
    • Target curb weight during prototyping was 2800 pounds.
    • Center of gravity: 17.7 inches high (1" lower than Cayman).
    • Base sticker expected at $28,000 (estimated).

LMFAO at the base sticker of $28k. Total fail. The new V6 Genesis Coupe is coming in with 350hp. It may be heavier but the R-spec is a $26k car with 4 seats and tons of interior luxury. The new 2.0t is coming in at 275hp and 275 ft./lbs of torque also (should be way more easier for big power now with typical bolt ons and tune). You have to be a true brand loyalist to even consider paying this much money for an anemic 200hp NA car.

OH, and the GC comes with 8 speed paddle shift automatics now also. That should really help acceleration and be able to keep the 2.0t in the power band better with more boost.

Right off the Hyundai website. Figure 1500-2000 off MSRP right now.

    From
    $26,750 MSRP

Not many did, why do you think they quit making them? If they are selling you keep making them.

With a MSRP like that Toyota might be taking a gamble. Even till today some people won't buy a Hyundai because it's a Hyundai even if it might be fast, cheap, and affordable. Just because this is built base off of AE86, it's almost enough of a reason for someone to get it.

I would rather have an S2000 then a 350z. The 350Z doesnt handle that well without modifications in my opinoin. The S2000 is much more fun to drive even if it isn't as powerful. Its high revving and is nimble and agile. Much like what the FR-S is suppose to be. The Genesis is hard to compare.. Yes its powerful and cheap but its heavy, slow, and doesnt handle that well.

Hyundai is the new HONDA/TOYOTA, regardless what their image was 10 years ago, they build really good cars now, actually better than the Hondas or Toyotas.

The S2000 was always a womans car to me, just like the Miata.

The new Genesis Coupe 2.0t will have 275hp/275 torque with a new 8 speed auto or new 6 speed manual, so it will not be slow. It is heavier but it is an actually usable car with 4 seats and not a toy like the FR-S is going to be.

I don't think the FR-S will ever have 275hp/275lbs of torque.. Just wouldn't make sense. I don't see how the S2000 is a womans car. Its owned mostly my guys. Plus it outtracks both the FR-S and the Genesis.

The S2000 can be driven by both males and females. But the majority of drivers are males. The FR-S is going to be the same. I know the styling on the FR-S is going to attract females as well. There aren't many cars that females would not drive if they wanted to.

I have seen girls driving convertibles but the same goes for cars that people consider generally GUY cars. Like mustangs or camaros. I have seen woman in them before.
