Thoughts on the recently revealed specs...

If this thing really weighs 2800 flippin pounds with only 200hp I'm out. I want a track missile not a wheezy porker. Keep it below 2600lbs Toyota, and whats with the rumored $28K price?!?!! I can get a 305hp Mustang V6 with the track pack that will 0-60 in the 5's and pull .98G on the skidpad for $24k OTD or for $28K a GT Mustang with 412hp that will suck the headlights out of 9/10th of the cars on the road. I can get a I feel like I'm getting setup for a HUGE disappointment when the Tokyo motor show gets here. Dont get me wrong, I love the styling/size, but if Toyobaru neutered this thing to appeal to the camry and corolla crowd I'm going to be pissed.

I would classify the FT86 in a different car market - relatively good handling, balanced weight car to drive with sufficent engine power, rear drive, fun car to drive, relatively small car but not an "econo box" and price reasonable. Probaly the closest car is the Hyundai Genesis.

I would categorized the Mustang as a much larger car. Lots of raw power. If you want power, then this is your the car. Just a different cup of tea.

The Corvette would be my favorite for power and handling but not price. It is actually has a much shorter length than the mustang. A person drawback on the Vette is the price and I hate the long hood line -- but without the hoodline where do you put the v-8?

Since I live in the big city with steep hills, curved roads, I want a car that has good handling, fun to drive, easy to slip though small spaces for lane change and parallel park. Power is not an issue, but I do want a extremely responsive car and not one with lag (more torque on the lower end -- One reason Honda cars is not top on my list and also it is front wheel drive).

Oh I totally agree they are aimed at different buyers, but unless that thing is light it aint gonna corner well enough to justify the lack of motor.

For that price and those numbers.....it feels like a rip off in my opinion... might as well just get a wrx which is turboed and awd or the genesis 2.0T, i doubt it will be that expensive though it wouldnt make any sense.

do people magically forget that is going to be a mass produced daily driver? this isn't some custom built track toy for you and you alone, this is being sold to masses of people, most of whom will likely be going to school and work first. You have to appeal to everyone not just johnny drifter.......and I understand people will want to modify to taste, that's the idea, you ARE the aftermarket, it'll be up to you to set it up how YOU want it. it's not Toyota's job to do that.

Well, at 28k, why the hell would I mod the car? By the time you do 5k in mods you are into an entirely different level of car.

Hell you are into EVO X territory, you know, best handling car under $40k, forged aluminum suspension, aluminum fenders, hood, roof, light weight windshield, active yaw control, Recaro buckets, all for around 33k? True, not RWD, but if I am buying the car just for that........MAJOR FAIL.

There are surely other RWD vehicles that work for a daily driver and to go to school. Maybe if you live in the south this car will have mass appeal, no one in the north is going to running out loving a RWD car for the winter months with 9-12 inches of snow coming down.

Nailed it. The only market is for the import lovers vs. American car haters as a reason to write off the Mustang.

Really, sort of like CORVETTE, MUSTANG BOSS 302, CAMARO ZL1, 392 Challenger, GT-R? It was not Chevy, Ford, or Dodge, Nissans job to lay out a screamer from the factory? That was on us?????

I really don't think this car can be compared to the same market as the corvette mustang or GT-R.

I think the specs are great and it'll sell like hotcakes. Even if its not 2000lbs 300hp and 300lbs of tq.

SO are you out because its only 200hp or are you out because its 28K?

    What if its 20k?

I dont think camry and corolla drivers will buy an ft-86.

and how much do those cars cost ($49K $45K, $50K, $80K)? you know how much it costs for R & D on a car (like cutting of 100lbs)?

remember, at the end of the day, this is basically a RWD corolla in my eyes, who buys corollas (again, think the mass market, regardless "we" are a "niche" market). even the Genesis coupe, the owners are in their late 20s and the most extreme mods I've seen so far are exhaust and wheels. I don't have daddy's money to go and buy a $20K car and put $10K into it. While it would be really nice to a get a cheap car that's very fun to drive, there are things to consider....I primarily see 3 groups buying (on a profitable scale in Toyota's eyes) the FT-86:

college kids who are starting a real job and want to buy their first car on their own.

guys in their late 20s who are settled but don't have a family. (you think a guy with a wife and 1-2 kids is going drive this thing, again unless he has money to buy himself a toy along with his Honda Odyssey.)

dads who are loaded and want to suck their kids dicks by buying them a nice first car.

and THEN you'll have a few tuners who have the money to burn on modding the car.

The Genesis Coupe has guys making really good power with typical mods. So I am not sure where you are getting exhaust and wheels.

Again, how many buy a 25030k vehicle then dump $5-10k into it?

Sure in another 5 years when used cars are into the 4 figure range, you will see some sink some big money into them.

If you demo is correct, this car is a fail. FEW, if any will buy a RWD car as a daily, at least in the northern half of the country, as mass transit.

Chalk up this car to DISASTER IMO. Trying to do too much with too little. The world does not need a plain jane RWD car for the masses that will be too small to be practical. If it does not come with track cred, forget about it.

I don't think this thing will be too slow on the track. Should be around the S2000. Which was a well regarded car and still is. How much power did you guys want out of the FR-S?

Don't think this car will be a disaster. That would be exaggerating. It is still going to sell very well.

It's a total freaking disaster in my book. 151 ft./lbs. of torque. SLUG. Torque gets you going. This is pathetic at best. The high spec gets 215 tires compared to the 205 for the low spec. WHoopi.

I was really hoping for 160+ ft lbs of torque.
