Toyota Launches New FT-86 App for Apple iPhone and iPod Users

It seems that there's an APP for just about everything these days – even for a car that hasn't been introduced in its final form yet. We're talking about the very, very long-awaited Toyota FT-86 rear-wheel drive sports coupe.
We should see the FT-86 making its grand debut alongside its sister Subaru model, the BRZ, at the Tokyo Motor Show in Japan this December, but until then, Toyota has introduced a new dedicated app for users of the Apple iPhone and iPod devices.

From what we understand, users will be able to place a digital rendering of the FT-86 on videos and photos they have shot on the streets – or something along those lines.

    Here’s what Toyota says:

Let’s shoot the images of FT-86 driving around the world and post them to “FT-86 World Report” with this APP! FT-86 is now driving around you! Please shoot cool images and keep on posting! Your image will be introduced as a “report” in the program on the interactive movie web site, “FT-86 World Report”. "

Toyota FT-86: There’s Even an App for That

Fanboys have been waiting for its arrival almost as long as Christians have been waiting for the second coming and now, lovers of Toyota‘s FT-86 sports car have a new way of passing the time until it arrives. Proving that there really is an App for everything, Toyota has just launched the “FT-86 World Report” App. Get ready to be disappointed.

It doesn’t let you race the FT-86 on the Nurburgring, or go behind the scenes of the creation or design of the car, or even have a great teaser of its exhaust note. Nope. Instead, the App let’s you digitally add a rendering of the FT-86 onto a photo you take and then upload it to the FT-86WorldREport.com website. Perhaps the only genuinely interesting part of this app is that you can see just how many others are as excited as you are about Toyota’s new affordable sports car.

Toyota will debut the FT-86 at the Tokyo Auto Show on November 30, with it’s sister car, the Subaru BRZ being unveiled the same day. The U.S. market Scion FR-S is expected to be unveiled at the New York Auto Show next spring.

Available for iPhone4, 4S and iPad2, download the app today here.

    Toyota Launches New FT-86 App

This December we’ll finally get to see the unveiling of the production version of Toyota’s ever evolving FT-86 Concept, and Subaru’s version of the car for that matter, but until then Toyota is doing everything it can to flog its concept car, announcing this week a new app as well as a worldwide marketing campaign.

Available now on the Apple iTunes Store, the app allows you to submit photos of the FT-86 for posting on the “FT-86 World Report”, an interactive movie website posing as a news center for all things FT-86 related.

Importantly, Toyota acknowledges that the FT-86 is driving around on public roads already and is asking you to keep an eye out for it.

Note, the app is designed to only work with the Apple iPhone4 and iPod touch 4th Generation.

You can access the FT-86 World Report homepage by visiting this link. On the site, you can select which region you live in to see if anyone has already submitted a photo of the FT-86 in your own backyard.

As mentioned, the production version of the FT-86 Concept and its Subaru twin will be unveiled this December at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show.

Toyota FT-86 World Report App Launched [Video]

The official unveiling of the production FT-86 sportscar will take place at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show in December, but Toyota must want a global unveiling somehow, because they’ve just announced the FT-86 World Report App, which allows you to snap a few shots or the car as you spot it and then upload them.

The application is available for download for free at the Apple iTunes Store, and here’s what Toyota has to say: “Let’s shoot the images of FT-86 driving around the world and post them to “FT-86 World Report” with this APP! FT-86 is now driving around you! Please shoot cool images and keep on posting! Your image will be introduced as a “report” in the program on the interactive movie web site, “FT-86 World Report”.”

Th app can be downloaded in English, Japanese and Chinese and is good for the iPhone4 and iPodTouch4.

A very short video of what they had in mid when they introduced the app has also been uploaded to Toyotaglobal Youtube page, featuring a young rasta-haired man and his surprise at the FT-86... that’s not really the target audience for the car, is it Toyota?

Let’s hope the car is better than the video.
