New Toyota Supra Back in the Product Plan

There once was a time when Toyota used to have many sporty coupes in its line-up, like the MR-2, Celica and even a Camry V6 coupe. However, their flagship model was the Supra, a car that could keep up and beat almost anything offered by the Germans or the Americans at the time.
In the last decade, Toyota had axed all its sporty coupes, with the Supra bowing out in 2002, leaving many fans wanting for more.
Over the last few years, the rumor-mill has been busy with talk about the resurrection of the Supra, most of which revolve around a slightly toned down version of the Lexus LFA.
While Toyota officially denies these rumors, according to some insiders, a skunkworks project is underway and we could see a new Supra by 2014. Whether it be based on the FT-86 or the LFA platform (or something entirely new) is not known. Either way, sportscar fans can’t wait to see the fifth-generation Supra. Neither can we.

Toyota will have to prove to me and many other Supra fans and tuners that the MKV supra will be as good or better than the MKIV supra.

Speculation is only so good, but I will wait for some real facts!

They should just take the existing Supra motor and upgrade it with new technology to make it more efficient and powerful. Throw it in a sleek wide body and frame and I think we can have ourselves a new Supra.

    3JZGTE? haha

I just wish Toyota will take the MKIV Supra design, modernize it, and add some aggressive lines. But I'm having my doubts about that happening, although thats what most of us want.

Strongly believe Toyota will be going for a total new design.

The design is not a huge issue as long as it stays aggressive and in line with a performance car. I am more worried about the engine and performance. WHen the R35 was announced many enthusiasts were worried about it being a heavy slug and loosing the prestige of the rb26 on the r34. But Nissan sure showed the industry who is boss with the R35.. It's a true beast and continues to impress everyone.

Yea, im a lot more concerned about performance. Would hate to have a nice looking car that goes really slow (Honda CR-Z is a good example). But with the new Toyota styling chief, he wants all new Toyota's to have aggressive styling and have the overall car be something you would expect from toyota.

SO if Toyota is sticking to it roots (or as it seems they will be) the next generation Supra should be like the MKIV but way better.

I Just hope it's fast enough to take on the Nissan GT-R, that will be a hard one but I have faith in Toyota.

The GTR is going to be very hard to beat. Even german automakers are having a hard time. Italian sports cars can't even keep up with the GTR on the track.

Not worried about design. I know Toyota has the capability to design a good looking car, will they design the car to be light and strong enough? Will the engine be strong enough and offer enough HP and TQ at the right RPM? How well will the traction control be designed. Many questions. The LF-A is an amazing car but it just isn't that quick for the price. I'd hope Toyota (if they are designing a Supra) will take a good look at the GTR for inspiration.

Hmmm the IS300 is a sedan plus its pretty heavy. Wouldn't exactly call the IS300 sleek. I was looking for a new design in the ways of a Supercar. Sort of like the FR-S or LF-A design but with a bit of original supra design heritage.
