The BRZ/FR-S is designed as a classic sportscar. Light weight, low power, great to exceptional handling. So I think it would be cross-shopped with the Miata. That's about it. The BRZ/FR-S fills a niche that has no cars in it right now. The S2000 is close also, but no longer sold new. Maybe the Z4, but that's kinda pushing it. Also, all of these cars are only 2-seaters. Anything else is FWD.

I think someone looking for a new car like the BRZ/FR-S will come down to it and the Miata.

The GTi would be fairplay. I don't think the Golf-R would be fair. 266 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The highest spec GTi is 200 hp, 207 lb-ft?

The Genesis would be a good comparison. S2000 is a popular car to compare it to. 350z you can compare to. Basically any front engine rear wheel drive that is around the 30K price range.

Mazda Miata MX-5 and the GTi. The FR-S will have future competition, Nissan wants to bring back the Nissan 200sx/Siliva ..

Like others have mentioned, it competes with small, light weight, RWD cars like the Miata, S2000 and RX-8. I think cars like the Gencoupe and 350Z/370Z are too large to compare it to.

That nissan concept is way too much of a concept to be even considered competition.

The Miata starts at 23K so if the FR-S is going to start at 25K+ its going to be tough for the FR-S. Worth noting though, the Miata is only 167hp. Arguably not as sexy as the FR-S. Only seats two (Even though the FR-S really only seats 2).

BUT - and a huge BUT - The Miata only weighs 2400lbs. The Gen coupe is bigger and heavier but its also more powerful, I think its worth comparing. The S2000 faces the same problem as the Miata. Not very practical. And its only comparable if you look at the USED car market. Same goes for the 350z or G35 - used.

I can't think of any comparable 2 door hatchback,RWD,200hp, 2700lb cars out there that are apparently going to be 25K apart from the VW GTi.

the base sport miata may cost $23k, but it has slightly less kit than the FRS. a comparable model would be the miata touring, but then you are talking $25k. the BRZ is supposed to cost $25~ish. i would be surprised if the FRS was more than $22k.

the only advantage the FRS has over the miata is cargo space, when talking practicality. and only because it has a rear seating area that can pass through to the trunk. the miata can be a very capable daily driver, but it depends on your requirements. however, if your requirements mean the miata is not a suitable daily car, then the FRS wont be much better.

currently, there are NO small, 2-door, RWD sporty cars on the market. its going to be miata, BRZ, FRS.

Because this market is extremely small.

The only cars i can think of would be a 350Z, Miata... 370Z S2000, RSX, or alteast anything from this decade unless you want to count the Integra Type R ..

other wise hes right there are no small two door rwd cars..

That's one reason why they made the Toybaru. Because when you really get down to it, the Miata isn't a 2+2 seater or a hardtop. So the FR-S/BRZ doesn't have any direct competition.

It may be a 2+2 but in reality the second row is unusable. It does give you some room to throw some junk though.

Don't underestimate hatchbacks like the FR-S. A good example is my rsx. Same hatchback design. I fit a treadmill in the back. I can go to ikea and buy something and drive it home. A miata can't do that. That is what I meant by practicality. They are both 2 door 2 seaters. I don't even consider the rear seats a real seat on the FR-S.

The FR-S isn't a hatch. It has a normal trunk lid. They did that to save weight.
