Toyota 86 Sports Car Priced From $25,600 in Japan

    From Inside Line;

    Just the Facts:
    • Toyota announced in Japan that prices for the new 86 sports car will range from $25,600 for a bare-bones "customizable" model to $38,200 for the top-of-the-line GT Limited trim level.
    • The Toyota 86 will be offered in Japan in four trim levels — Customize Grade, G, GT and GT Limited — according to the Web site gtchannel.com.
    • The starter Customize Grade comes without air-conditioning and gets unpainted bumpers.

TOKYO — Toyota announced Tuesday in Japan that prices for the new 86 sports car will range from $25,600 for a bare-bones "customizable" model to $38,200 for the top-of-the-line GT Limited edition.
The Toyota 86 will be offered in Japan in four trim levels — Customize Grade, G, GT and GT Limited — according to the Web site gtchannel.com.

The starter Customize Grade comes without air-conditioning and gets unpainted bumpers for "racing and customizing purposes," according to the Web site. The standard G grade is priced from $31,000 and the step-up GT grade is $35,900.
Among the extra-cost options are a six-speed automatic transmission, limited-slip differential, aluminum pedals and three-spoke steering wheel.
Production for the Japanese domestic market starts March 12, and dealers have started taking orders.
The 86 goes on sale in the U.S. this spring rebadged as the 2013 Scion FR-S. Prices haven't been announced, but Toyota has said the U.S. car will start "under $30,000."

Inside Line says: Could be a tough sell in the States against a Miata that starts at less than $25,000.

For "Under" $30 000 is the Scion FR-S worth it to you?

HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!! This car is an EPIC fail. There are many good cars at and above $30k, and this ain't one of them. I was hoping for 23-24k. LOL

I see no reason why anyone would spend that much money on a small car with a measly 200hp, I don't care how light (it is not really that light) it is. Just more bad news. The Genesis Coupe is a steal in comparison.

Yeah, good point. When I hear under $30k, my mind translates that to like 29,500.

I wont buy it if it's over $25k USD. Mine will be track only and I can buy better things with that sort of money.

27k USD is a little too steep for a 200 HP Scion still though... 25-26k would probably be max for most people at 27 they're going to lose a lot of customers who would just rather buy something else for the price

I don't see WHY this car would be $25k+. It doesn't even have that many features nor is it luxurious in any sense of the word. Scion better get their shit straight.

LOL, really 30k? Yeah right for even 25k I can get a WRX 4 Wheel Drive Sub, 0-60 in like 5 sec? 4 door, and 25 mpg. Scion is dreaming, I'd consider paying 27-29k for the concept and if they added about 12 inches to the length. So what are we hoping for now? At least there's the 2013 Honda civic, Toyota Supra, and new chief designer for Toyota with a promise. Out of all those models, they should at least bring one good looking model. But I'll hold my judgement till I drive it. And this is first model

Even at $25k USD which a lot of people wont mind paying, the Scion FR-S is still beat by the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, they go for about $22k.

I was reading about this on a blog, and one of the guys had a bunch of valid points about FR-S U.S. Pricing:

I’ll go along with the group of people saying that you can’t compare Japanese prices to USD. Consider these points.
-There are Suby and Scion versions in the US.
-Significantly less power and less complex drivetrain than the WRX
-Base WRX is $25.5k, premium at 28k
-Premium WRX and BRZ are spec’ed similarly with the exception of HIDs and Nav standard on the BRZ
-Scion will be decontented compared to BRZ.
-Suby has already said pricing for the BRZ premium will be in the neighborhood of $24-25k
-Scion doesn’t sell a single car that starts over $20k.
-Hyundai genesis 2.0T and the mustang V6 start in the $23-24k range
Looking at those facts, and assuming that:
    a) The FR-S must be cheaper than the BRZ if it loses out on some of the standard squipment the BRZ gets
    b) Subaru is being honest on price
    c) Subaru actually wants to sell some of these, which they won’t if they price it higher than a WRX base model

I’ve come to the conclusion that pricing will probably end up at $24.5 for the BRZ and $23k for the FR-S. Any higher and they lose out on price to the competition, and the low power number hurts them enough already to magazine racers.
At $24k I’ll sure as hell buy one though. Especially if the rumors of a factory supercharger add-on coming down the pike in a couple years are true.

The FR-S will have trouble selling at any price higher than $25 000.

Looking at the price of popular domestic coupes you will see why:

    2012 Ford Mustang - $22 000

    2012 Chevrolet Camaro - $23 000

How people will see it..... Why would I want to pay $25-30k for a small rear wheel drive 4 cylinder when I can get a rear wheel drive V6 for cheaper..
