    SPOTTED : Turbocharged Scion FR-S / Toyota 86

What seems to be a turbocharged Scion FR-S was caught testing at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca track during a drifting session held by Scion's Drift Team.

The person who shot the video states that "the white car was 'definitely' turbocharged"

It looks like Scion is doing some testing on the FR-S for drifting since behind the white FR-S it looks like another Scion FR-S.

TURN UP the audio during the last turn that the white Scion FR-S takes and you definitely hear either wastegate or blowoff valve fluttering.
    <br>

The Scion FR-S could definately use more power and a turbocharger kit would be a efficient way to do so. I didn't expect to see one so early though. I have a feeling that Greddy is the one behind this turbo kit for the FR-S. The boxer motor along with a turbocharger would sound very aggresive. Really looking forward to more information on a turbocharged or boosted Scion FR-S or Toyota 86.

We’ve been thoroughly excited about the upcoming release of the Scion FR-S – read our review here – but with any other sports car we hope that it’ll get a version with more power. A turbocharged Scion FR-S was recently spied testing out at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, but we shouldn’t get too excited yet.
We have reason to believe that the turbocharged Scion FR-S seen drifting is actually the drift car being built by GReddy for Scion drifter Ken Gushi. Gushi has been campaigning a rear-wheel-drive converted tC for the past few years in Formula Drift and it’s publicly known that he’ll be climbing into the ****pit of an FR-S for the upcoming season.
Previously, Gushi had teamed up with RS*R for the development of his race cars, but with RS*R taking a back seat this year, GReddy was called upon to execute a custom turbocharged powerplant and to get Scion’s new sports car ready to roll sideways.
We still have no doubts that Toyota will come out with a more powerful version of their new sports coupe, but we still believe it’ll come in the ways of a supercharger from TRD, rather than a turbocharged setup. For now, we can enjoy the sound of a turbocharged FR-S going sideways.
Check out the video after the break.

Some have been saying that it could just be a built EJ25 motor dropped in. That would be the easiest way for them but you never know. Developing a turbo kit quickly isn't impossible. A log style manifold and a small turbo with custom bent piping is possible to do quickly.

Or i still think that its the motor that came with the car, as it would make no sense to drop in a Ej25 into the car, when greddy could possibly be the first ones ready with a after market turbo kit, since at this moment they have a live test car, and will be able to push the car to its limits, while they have ken gushi behind the wheel!

Sounds like a Greddy blowoff valve fluttering. It is most likely a Greddy turbo kit. Greddy is usually the first to come out with a turbo kit for new cars anyways. The cast iron manifold will probably change the exhaust note to rumble more. If its real we should be seeing real photos and videos of this turbocharged drift spec Scion FR-S

I believe it is wastegates that do the fluttering not the BOV. The sound seems to be wastegate flutter more then the blowoff valve. The greddy blow off valve makes a single woosh sound rather then a flutter. I don't think its impossible that there is already a Greddy turbo kit in the works. Considering Greddy is the first company to make aftermarket parts for the FR-S they have probably had more time with the Scion FR-S then any other aftermarket manufacturer. Greddys Tuner turbo kits usually only add 5-8psi of boost so I don't know if the wastegate flutter is true. Wastegate flutter isn't considered a good thing on turbo cars, especially not on high boost applications.

I would actually assume that it is more likely to be compressor surge rather then wastegate chatter of turbo flutter.
"Actual wastegate flutter occurs instead under partial boost conditions such as partial throttle near the boost threshold. It sounds like FftFftFft not ShuShuShu and is caused by the rapid opening and closing of the wastegate at boost levels near the spring pressure. It is commonly heard more clearly and may be more prominent on cars with modified intake silencers, up-pipes, and or downpipes, and is not harmful. "
The noise is in fact the air compressed by the turbo passing back through the compressor wheel of the turbo after the airflow is abruptly halted by the throttle plate closing, called compressor surge.

Judging that, this car is made for Ken Gushi and will be entering Formula D or D1 GP which the car will be atleast pushing out 350 at a bare minimum, and since most FD cars usually sit around 400-600 HP id say this Greddy turbo variant is pushing more than 5-8 PSI given what the other cars have. the production turbo kit may have a 5-8 psi increase and will prob not flutter around the same speed, but this should be "based" off their production kit whenever they release it.

regardless of what ever is making that noise right now Greddy is the first one to get that turbo kit kick, and will have a jump start on everyone else, but there are a tone of parts being shown , herd and, leaked before the car is even out! im really curious what the parts catalog will look for this car once its released!
