    FR-S / FT-86 / BRZ Unlocked ECU

    According to Spanish magazine "Autopista",

That the FR-S Has an unlocked ECU
Does this mean that we can tune on our own and that everything we do will be unlock and easy to tune? that we can set whatever we want? this will be one hell of a car!

"They have freed car's electronics (ECU) so aftermarket industry can tune it at its will"

Unlocked ECU makes me wonder. Toyota is allowing us to fine tune the stock vehicle which makes you wonder what the warranty will be like. I'm sure there has to be some restriction on warranty.

Great plan for the OEM. Let everyone make changes to the ECU, increase power, essentially eliminating any possible drive train warranty. I would be all for mods if I were an OEM, gets you off the hook for big ticket items.

Thinking about it for the manufacture is a a great plan since they can claim it's the "customers negligence" that caused the issues, once that customer has modified and tuned the vehicle.

Maybe with this new direction of user interaction we will see a different type of warranty, maybe something that works like insurance? hmm.

I would love to see the legal way of handling the tuning of this car, can a manufacture blame a person for tuning a car, with lets say provided tuning computer and other things as well, if your selling a car with adjustable suspension they expect one to change it other wise whats the point of selling it with that part, im sure there will be limits and ways of doing so, but it will be interesting what will be set as a grey area with toyota.

Wonder if there is a tuning restriction for maximum fuel delivery increase. This ECU should still have a learning capability. Wonder what the range is. hmm. I can see a simple OEM flash giving this car 10-20extra hp and prob more torque.

Some the more modern engine management systems on the toyotas are really sensitive to aftermarket piggyback fuel tuning. The unlocked ECU pretty much helps aftermarket tuners make programers to reflash the ECU and optimize fuel and spark for a given setup. Ive always envied the subaru, honda, and mitsubishi owners that are able to go online and to like COBB sport or Hondata and get an ECU reflash. Opens the door for some really good plug and play systems to be developed.
