    Air/Oil Separator

Installing a Crawford Air/Oil Separator would seem to be a great way to keep the engine running better while increasing it's longevity. And yet, there are questions about whether or not the unit will negatively effect vacuum, causing a reduction in performance. Is there a reason this is happening and how can it be corrected? Has the manufacturer provided information on how to solve this problem?

    Thanks

well typically oil catch cans dont affect vaccuum, how could they? its just a extra vacuum reservior. As far as longevity, yes and no. pcv system should still be serviced and inspected as per manf. recommendations but they can help keep intake and throttle clean, this keeping carbon down helping for Consistant, not better, but more consistant fuel mileage between throttle cleaning services. hope this helps

Thank you gentlemen for your input..... And yes it helps!

It would seem that regular pcv and throttle cleaning maintenance is a less expensive option when compared to the installation of an air/oil separator. Extracting oil vapors from collecting on the manifold and settling on the cylinders, as MDT points out, is a good way to keep "consistent" gas mileage and will also contribute to the air/gas mixture from becoming too combustible, which in the long term, can cause a slight loss in performance. Preventive Maintenance..... Ain't it great?!

My thinking was that if Air/Oil separators are good for high performance engines, wouldn't it be good for all cars?

There is no point in getting a cheap ebay one, what the cheap ones are missing is the most important part, baffles. Normally the cheap ones are just empty chambers, maybe some have pieces of scotch pad inside but if they don't have baffles the oil doesn't "Catch" therefor pointless, as for installation you can do it yourself, the key is just finding a decent location and the hosing is simple just goes on the hose between pcv valve and intake

I think information on these units was mentioned in one of better car magazines such as "Import Tuner." I also found information on the internet listed under: Crawford Performance & GrimmSpeed, but unfortunately I can't get the link to upload. You may want to check out YouTube, as there are several videos available. I've also e-mailed both manufacturers about their units and asked for information... I'll keep you posted. You do the same, yes?

    Thanks

cool. never looked into this stuff.

Don't think I'd invest in it though. Doesn't seem like something I'd need.

The expense of a good systemwould be prohibitive and I know Air/Oil separator's are used mostly on engines with turbo chargers and oil cooling units, but still....With just the separator alone, the benefits to the engine are desirable. I just wish the price was desirable too.

The cost of a quality oil/air separator is not all that much as GReddy, Crawford and GrimmSpeed all have kits in the $150.00 range. The problem is if I get the O/A kit, then I'll start pricing intercoolers and oil cooling systems and that's how for me, the cost becomes prohibitive.

These options are the beginning of a slippery slope and in the final analysis, do I really need parts that may be better suited for turbo/super charged cars? And yes, I've considered street headers, but again slippery slope... slippery slope. I just luv playing with cars!

I'd just leave the air oil separator alone.

Start by doing the intake/header/ and exhaust!

    And look for a tune.

    Thank you I_N.

Your article on the NOS system was interesting and gave me something to think about.
