Will it sound like other Subarus?

People always wonder whether this boxster engine will sound like a tractor like other Subaru engines. I have a tip from someone that says otherwise so we can all relax hopefully (this is a rumor)

About the Subaru flat four... They did manage to conjure up a tuned exhaust port and equal length, unequal diameter runners...and the result is that this flat four exhibits none of the "blap blap blap" noises akin to older Subaru flat 4's. It sounds very much like a inline 4 now, and unless you peek under the hood, most people will be hard pressed to know its not a straight 4. Very crisp, sounds and extremely light and responsive throttle.
So one of my issues is now somewhat addressed and the car, if all else is good, with proven Aisin 6 speed manual transmission and well tuned chassis, would be a very attractive product for sub-$30,000 price tag. Can't wait!!

Thats pretty good news. While there isn't really anything too bad about the trademark subie sound this is still a Toyota car and needs to sound like one. It shouldn't be too hard for Toyota to do that. Since not all Boxer type engines sound like a lawnmower.

Plus the sound from the prototype they debuted at TAS doesn't sound anything like a subie. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62MLas8sWQc]YouTube - FT86 Engine sound[/ame]

That video sounds awfully like Grand Turismo, but without doubting the authenticity of the sound in that clip, the traditional Subaru boxster engine:

really does sound different from any straight 4 cyl I have ever encountered. If they overcame the runner length vs exhaust port issue then it should sound very nice indeed. More like the old Audi Straight 5 cylinder or something else very torquey.

from what i know about the vid posted above. that FT86 prototype has an unknown engine in it. rumors say its an ej20 from an STI that they modified the exhaust ports to disguise the subie trademark sound. either way im banking money the FT86 production model does not sound anything like a subie.

Too early to tell what the real engine will sound like until we get some more definite specifications and some more sneak preview videos of the car in action. Probably will have no resemblance to the Subaru sound.

if they were able to disguise the sound of that EJ20 they put in the prototype. they definitely wont have a problem giving it a toyota sound. plus im sure a lot of people will be turned off if it does sound like a subie. i know i will if it does end up sounding like that.

You can get Subaru engines to sound like an I4. The reason they sound so buff is because people put unequal length headers on. I'm not against that sound, I love it.
But I'm sure it will sound good no matter what you do to it.

Toyota will want to tune this thing to sound tuned. Doubt they would make it sound like a subaru. Subarus sound mean but not very tuned.

    You got that right.

The FR-S cannot be like any other car, and what good is it if's it's like a Subaru Impreza for example.

I remember watching a FR-S/FT-86 video, and you can hear a bit of the exhaust note and it doesn't sound anything like a subaru.
