Fuel Efficient FT-86 Engine = not so fun to drive

So Toyota has discovered that Subaru's boxer engine is not as fuel efficient as they would like it to be, so there might be a change in the works. What this means is that a car that would have been amazingly fun to drive, will probably be lacking that quality. The FT-86 is designed stylishly to attract a "driver's" audience, now with fuel efficiency as priority over performance, the FT-86 is looking less and less like the concept day by day.

i hope too god they dont de-tune the boxer engine im sure everyone is happy with 17-20 mpg on a sports car.....anything else would be a plus and maybe they should offer a cold air intake stock to help boost the fuel economy

come on Toyota dont let us down after we've waited this long

I still am going to keep my faith in a Toyota and trust them on this one. It's easy to start to be skeptical with every move and announcement they make but it means nothing until you have actually test driven it to see.

The article just says that the boxer engine was not efficient enough. This could also mean not putting out enough specific horsepower to it weight. Lets not get too worried yet.

I agree. Once there are some concrete numbers and stats on the fuel efficiency for the FT-86, then we can start to worry. I just hope that Toyota does not stray far from the concept and make the FT-86 into a car that is no longer fun to drive.

I hope that Toyota doesn't sacrifice performance for the sake of fuel efficiency. How many people who track their car worry about fuel efficiency anyways... definitely not me! It would be nice though if Toyota could figure out a way to make the FT-86 both powerful and fuel efficient.

I agree if people want a sports car and fuel efficency let them go look at the honda cr-v or possibly a toyota celica

I've never thought of sports car and fuel economy went together - it would be nice though, but as long as the FT-86 has great performance, I'll make the sacrifice of dealing with lesser fuel economy. In my opinion, the driving experience is more important to me.

yeah, definitely driving experience over fuel efficiency any day.

I am guessing that this is in direct competition with the Genesis coupe, they can't skimp out on power if that is the case.

I agree. I'm sure, if this article is accurate, that they are intercepting the internet interest and expectations for this vehicle and simply trying to meet the horsepower and performance everyone is wanting. They probably saw that there are those that want the ft-86 with 200 or less hp and cheap, and those that want it to be more upscale with 250hp or more. This is why they say they are marketing it to an older group, because typically younger buyers will look up-market for sportscars, but older buyers will not look down-market. I hate to say it, but I'm sure the final US prices will be around 26k for the base and the turbo will start around 30k. They will probably try to push the top performing ft-86 at a lower then 370z price, with a slightly lower then 370z 0-60 of about 5.5 or better. The base will likely be 6.5N/A. That would be my guess. Based on the incredibly limited info we have gotten I still don't think they will pit it directly against the 370z at 4.9 sec 0-60 and 3xK starting price, they will use the lower price bracket to seperate it from the pack and try to cater to a more price and fuel mileage conscience market. Again, just a guess...

Agreed, they really should not be in the same sentence. If I am looking for fuel efficiency I will go to a high MPG car tuned specifically for that. Driving experience is what I am looking for and the FT86 still has my attention.
