2012 has been an awesome year and there has been no shortage of highly anticipated debuts in the past 12 months. While the Tesla Model S is certainly the more intellectual car of choice for the thinking man, it's the affordable boxer-4 rear-wheel-drive Toyobaru sports car that has stolen the irrational hearts of car enthusiasts.

However, as spectacular as the new sports car is, we wouldn't go as far as to call it perfect. The Subaru-developed flat-four powerplant only delivers 200 horsepower at 7000 rpm. Peak torque is only 151 lb.-ft. from the naturally aspirated engine.

Then again, The Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ weren't intended to remain stock for the vast majority of its owners anyway. Think of it as the Japanese Ford Mustang - it's as much an automobile as it is a blank canvas for its owner. In September, we reported that a New Jersey tuning company, Accelerated Performance, unveiled its turbocharging kit for the BRZ and FR-S. Somehow, the black magicians managed to wring out as much as 440-hp at the wheels in more extreme settings. What's more, in-house tuner TRD, or Toyota Racing Development, revealed its supercharged FR-S less than a month later. Just like that, enthusiasts are not only given more power, but options on how they want it as well.


While the Scion FR-S is sensational right out of the box, it's the aftermarket opportunities that really sparks conversation. Beyond performance modifications, companies are keen to deliver unique body kits as well.

It's a nice kit but personally I'd stick with the FiveAxis for the street.

On the track the Rocket Bunny would be an awesome kit.
